I moved around a lot as a kid, attending 12 different schools from Kindergarten to 12th grade in California, New York, Montana and Florida. In Seattle, I finally found the home I’d craved after so many years of temporary surroundings. But now, after 22 years in the Northwest I’ve decided to move beyond my comfortable community and hit the road again.
Since 1992, I’ve worked in Seattle’s non-profit and philanthropic community. Had the immense pleasure of raising money for community facilities through the Seattle Chinatown-International District Preservation and Development Authority. I switched sides of the table and subsequently awarded and managed grants for the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. My time at the foundation was the best job in my life, but it also put me at arms-length from clients, students, participants, and this journey will help me reconnect to the field and get rejuvenated.
The title of this blog is a nod to my mother. She always sucks the marrow from chicken bones, and I aspire to suck the marrow from life every single day. I have an exhilirating feeling that anything is possible and know there will be many adventures in the days, weeks, and years ahead in Asia, Africa and Europe.
I hope you enjoy this blog as much as I love writing it to capture the spirit of my journeys. Please feel free to leave comments and links from other blogs.

Annie,
Even though I only see you once in a blue moon, I’ll miss you! Poker will be a different game without “Annie The Axe” at the felt.
I have no doubt that one of the first things you share with others during your travels is that you are a former PROUD Champion of the Central District Invitational Hold ‘Em Tournament. And if that doesn’t open doors for you, I don’t know what will.
Blog away, and be safe!

One of my missions is to find a poker crew in Vietnam! It won’t be the same as the CD Cardroom but will have to suffice until I return.
Anne Xuan Clarke,
your Canadian pals will be missing you until you are back with us to regale us with your new-found adventures and stories of generosity and exchange. I can’t wait!
I, especially, will be thinking of you far away and happy.
love,
Debora.
Debora, Miss you so much and can’t wait to see you in Thailand this month!!!
Buen viaje!!!
Good luck!!!
Seattle’s loss is the world’s gain. Thank you for documenting and sharing your story. It’s a wonderful source of inspiration. Good luck, Annie!
Scot, thanks. Just following in you and Soya’s footsteps!
Annie-la!
Miss you already! Keep writing grrrrrl! It really helps to bridge the distance. We’re so proud of you Annie!
And you can bet that Peaches and I will be planning a visit!
Love you! Janet
Janet, I’ve been posting more on Facebook so you and all my peeps are in the loop. Miss you and can’t wait to see you and ReeAh in 2011!
Well somebody has to save the world – you and Ms. Soohoo are doing a great job! So good that I can continue my quest for the perfect steak in Texas, save a few more kitties and Australian cattle herders. Keep up the good work Annie – real proud of you.
I wont plan on visiting like Ms. Soohoo – cause I couldnt get pass customs most likely with a Mr. clean sponge & windex – but our home is always open to you for a visit.
Love you & stay safe – Kayleen
Love that you’re crazy-happy!
Janet, thanks sweetie. I’ll be even happier to see you and ReeAh in October. Yesterday, someone was raving about the Gibbons Experience and we are going to have so much fun (and I’m going to conquer my fear of heights). xoxo Annie
I cannot express how delicious it is to follow you..
Renee, so glad you are enjoying the journey!
I can’t wait to see you!

Anne,
It has been a while since we met in Venice at Hobo BnB. I have enjoyed getting your blogs emails and watching your travels. I will be in Indonesia this summer/fall. Your blog postings make me itch more and more to be on that side of the world. You have become quite an inspiration. Keep it coming.

sucking the marrow is a good title. Had not heard this in a while. It came to mind when I was honing in on a piece of chicken. And yahooed it up and your story came up.
